How to Get Your Wisconsin Social Work License

How to get a Wisconsin social work license: SW Training Certificate, CSW, APSW, ISW and LCSW, 3,000 supervised hours for the clinical license, the endorsement route, and where Wisconsin stands on the Social Work Compact.

Concierge support for the Wisconsin application — start to issued license.

Wisconsin licenses independent clinical social workers as the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), through the Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, and Social Work Examining Board, Social Worker Section (Department of Safety and Professional Services). Wisconsin has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact, but no multistate licenses are being issued yet. Below: what Wisconsin asks of a social worker already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Wisconsin Social Work License Requirements

Wisconsin licenses social workers at 5 levels: the SW Training Certificate (Social Worker Training Certificate), the CSW (Certified Social Worker), the APSW (Certified Advanced Practice Social Worker), the ISW (Certified Independent Social Worker) and the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).

CSW: ASWB Bachelors. Bachelor's or master's in social work from a CSWE-accredited program, or a doctorate in social work (s. 457.08(1)). Also requires the Wisconsin statutes and rules exam. Every higher credential is granted to someone already certified at this level, and renewing a higher credential renews it automatically (s. 457.20(4)).

APSW: ASWB Masters. Often written CAPSW. MSW or social work doctorate (s. 457.08(2)); Wisconsin statutes and rules exam also required.

ISW: ASWB Advanced Generalist. Often written CISW. A non-clinical advanced credential: MSW plus 3,000 hours over at least 2 years of supervised practice after APSW certification (MPSW 3.07; s. 457.08(3)).

LCSW: ASWB Clinical. MSW with a clinical concentration and supervised clinical field training, or 1,500 substitute hours of supervised clinical experience over at least one year (MPSW 3.09(1)). The only credential in the chapter that is a license rather than a certificate.

Independent clinical practice requires the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).

3,000 hours of post-master's supervised experience for the clinical license.

Wisconsin requires a state law or jurisprudence exam.

Licensed elsewhere: Reciprocal credential at each level for someone holding a similar current credential in another state or territory whose requirements are substantially equivalent, who discloses all discipline and passes the Wisconsin statutes and rules exam (s. 457.15; MPSW 3.12). No minimum years licensed.

Where Wisconsin Applications Get Delayed

Wisconsin issues three social work certificates (CSW, APSW, ISW) and one license (LCSW). Each credential requires two exams: the ASWB exam for that level and the open-book Wisconsin statutes and rules exam, which is taken only once across social work credentials (MPSW 5.01).

LCSW hours: 3,000 hours of clinical practice after the MSW, including 1,000 face-to-face client hours, at least 600 of them DSM diagnosis and treatment (MPSW 3.09(3)). Hours in Wisconsin count only while you hold an active APSW or ISW. Supervision is an average of one hour per week, with no total-hours figure in the rule (MPSW 4.01). New supervisor qualifications took effect October 1, 2026 (MPSW 4.02).

The Social Work Licensure Compact was enacted as 2025 Wisconsin Act 232 (Assembly Bill 80; Senate Bill 74 was the companion bill), approved by the governor April 8, 2026 and published April 9, 2026.

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Social Work Compact and Wisconsin

Wisconsin has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact (April 8, 2026). When the Compact opens, a social worker whose home state is Wisconsin will be able to apply for one multistate license that covers every member state, and members' multistate licensees will be able to practice here. That has not happened yet: as of October 2026 the Commission was still building its data system and had issued no multistate licenses. Until it does, practicing here takes a Wisconsin license.

Keeping it current

Wisconsin renews social work licenses every 2 years, with 30 hours of continuing education per cycle. 30 hours per 2-year credential period for every social work credential, at least 4 in professional ethics and boundaries; social workers must take the ethics hours in an interactive format (MPSW 19.02). No CE is due at the first renewal. Holding licenses in several states means several calendars and several sets of CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
