Oklahoma licenses independent clinical social workers as the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), through the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers. Oklahoma has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact, but no multistate licenses are being issued yet. Below: what Oklahoma asks of a social worker already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Oklahoma Social Work License Requirements

Oklahoma licenses social workers at 5 levels: the LSWA (Licensed Social Work Associate), the LMSW (Licensed Master's Social Worker), the LSW (Licensed Social Worker), the LSW-ADM (Licensed Social Worker with Administration Specialty) and the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).

LSWA: ASWB Bachelors. BSW-level license; may not practice independently.

LMSW: ASWB Masters. May not practice independently or in clinical private practice.

LCSW: ASWB Clinical. Only the LCSW may engage in the private practice of clinical social work (59 O.S. 1261.1).

Independent clinical practice requires the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).

3,000 hours of post-master's supervised experience for the clinical license, including 100 hours of direct supervision.

Licensed elsewhere: 59 O.S. 1261.1(D) requires the board to license an applicant who has held the same license level in good standing in another state for at least three continuous years since initial full licensure; otherwise OAC 675:10-1-15 compares the other state's requirements to Oklahoma's.

Where Oklahoma Applications Get Delayed

The endorsement route expects 3 years of licensure elsewhere, counted at the level you are applying for.

HB 3015 (effective November 1, 2024) cut the post-MSW supervised experience for LCSW, LSW and LSW-ADM from 4,000 hours over two years to 3,000 hours; the board's rules matched it effective July 25, 2025. LCSW hours must be direct client contact under an LCSW, with at least 100 hours of educational supervision.

Supervision toward LSW, LSW-ADM or LCSW can begin only after the candidate holds an LSWA or LMSW and the board approves a supervision contract tied to a specific job description; volunteer hours do not count, and candidates may sign "MSW, under supervision" but not "LCSW".

Applicants approved to test receive a one-time provisional license valid for one year, during which they must pass the ASWB exam (OAC 675:10-1-10, 675:10-1-16).

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Social Work Compact and Oklahoma

Oklahoma has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact (May 8, 2025). When the Compact opens, a social worker whose home state is Oklahoma will be able to apply for one multistate license that covers every member state, and members' multistate licensees will be able to practice here. That has not happened yet: as of October 2026 the Commission was still building its data system and had issued no multistate licenses. Until it does, practicing here takes an Oklahoma license.

Keeping it current

Oklahoma renews social work licenses every year, with 16 hours of continuing education per cycle. Licenses expire December 31 every year; 16 hours per license held, at least 3 in ethics (OAC 675:10-1-6, 675:10-1-12.1). CE is waived for the calendar year in which the licensee passed the exam. Holding licenses in several states means several calendars and several sets of CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
