Nevada licenses independent clinical social workers as the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), through the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers. Nevada is not a Social Work Licensure Compact member. Below: what Nevada asks of a social worker already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Nevada Social Work License Requirements

Nevada licenses social workers at 4 levels: the LSW (Licensed Social Worker), the LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker), the LISW (Licensed Independent Social Worker) and the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).

LSW: ASWB Bachelors. An LSW applicant with an MSW takes the ASWB Masters exam instead (NAC 641B.105).

LMSW: ASWB Masters. Added by regulation R103-23A, effective 6/5/2024. Required before starting a clinical or independent internship.

LISW: ASWB Advanced Generalist. Independent non-clinical license; requires a 3,000-hour board-approved postgraduate internship (NAC 641B.140).

LCSW: ASWB Clinical. Requires a 3,000-hour board-approved postgraduate clinical internship completed in 2 to 3 years (NAC 641B.150).

Independent clinical practice requires the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).

3,000 hours of post-master's supervised experience for the clinical license.

Licensed elsewhere: A social worker with a corresponding license in good standing in another state or D.C. can be licensed by endorsement at the same level without retaking the exam (NAC 641B.126). There is no minimum number of years.

Where Nevada Applications Get Delayed

Clinical hours must come through a board-approved internship: you need a Nevada LMSW, an approved site and an approved supervisor before hours count. At least 2,000 hours must be psychotherapy and 1,000 must be supervised by an LCSW (NAC 641B.150).

Interns meet a supervisor at least 1 hour per week, no more than 24 hours of group supervision in total, and may not practice social work outside Nevada during the internship (NAC 641B.150, 641B.160).

Nevada keeps a non-clinical independent license (LISW, Advanced Generalist exam) separate from the LCSW. The compact bill SB 68 (2025) died.

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Social Work Compact and Nevada

Nevada is not a Social Work Licensure Compact member, so a multistate license will not cover practice here even once the Compact opens. Seeing clients located in Nevada takes a Nevada license, by endorsement where the state offers it or a full application where it does not.

Keeping it current

Nevada renews social work licenses every year, with 36 hours of continuing education per cycle. Licenses renew every year by the end of the birth month, with no grace period (NAC 641B.110). CE is collected every other renewal: LCSW and LISW need 36 hours per 2-year cycle (2 suicide prevention, 6 cultural diversity, equity and inclusion, 4 ethics, 12 in field of practice); LSW and LMSW need 30. Holding licenses in several states means several calendars and several sets of CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
