How to Get Your Iowa Social Work License

How to get an Iowa social work license: LBSW, LMSW and LISW, 3,000 supervised hours for the clinical license, the endorsement route, and where Iowa stands on the Social Work Compact.

Concierge support for the Iowa application — start to issued license.

Iowa licenses independent clinical social workers as the LISW (Licensed Independent Social Worker), through the Iowa Board of Behavioral Health Professionals (Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing). Iowa has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact, but no multistate licenses are being issued yet. Below: what Iowa asks of a social worker already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Iowa Social Work License Requirements

Iowa licenses social workers at 3 levels: the LBSW (Licensed Bachelor Social Worker), the LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker) and the LISW (Licensed Independent Social Worker).

LBSW: ASWB Bachelors.

LMSW: ASWB Masters.

LISW: ASWB Clinical.

Independent clinical practice requires the LISW (Licensed Independent Social Worker).

3,000 hours of post-master's supervised experience for the clinical license, including 110 hours of direct supervision.

Licensed elsewhere: Iowa issues a reciprocal license to a social worker licensed in a state with similar or equal requirements; you send verification from the state where you were most recently licensed and disclose any complaints. Iowa also accepts ASWB Social Work Registry records, and anyone who does not fit that route can apply for licensure by verification.

Where Iowa Applications Get Delayed

Social work moved under the consolidated Board of Behavioral Health Professionals (2024 Iowa Acts, SF 2385); the rules now sit in 481 IAC chapters 880 and 881.

The LISW requires at least 3,000 hours over at least two years, including 1,500 hours of direct client contact and 110 hours of direct supervision (up to 50 in groups), with supervision continuing after the 110 hours. Iowa Code 154C.3 separately describes the experience as two years full-time or 4,000 hours.

Iowa accepts a passing score on California's equivalent licensing exam in place of the ASWB exam at the same level.

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Social Work Compact and Iowa

Iowa has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact (May 3, 2024). When the Compact opens, a social worker whose home state is Iowa will be able to apply for one multistate license that covers every member state, and members' multistate licensees will be able to practice here. That has not happened yet: as of October 2026 the Commission was still building its data system and had issued no multistate licenses. Until it does, practicing here takes an Iowa license.

Keeping it current

Iowa renews social work licenses every 2 years, with 27 hours of continuing education per cycle. Licenses renew on a fixed biennium from January 1 of odd-numbered years to December 31 of the next even-numbered year. The 27 hours include at least 3 hours of social work ethics. Licensees who see children or dependent adults must also complete Iowa's mandatory reporter training every three years. No CE is required for the first renewal. Holding licenses in several states means several calendars and several sets of CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
