Georgia licenses independent clinical social workers as the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), through the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists. Georgia has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact, but no multistate licenses are being issued yet. Below: what Georgia asks of a social worker already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.
Georgia Social Work License Requirements
Georgia licenses social workers at 2 levels: the LMSW (Licensed Master's Social Worker) and the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).
Independent clinical practice requires the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).
3,000 hours of post-master's supervised experience for the clinical license, including 120 hours of direct supervision.

The LCSW needs 3,000 hours of post-MSW clinical experience over 36 to 108 months. The first 2,000 hours must be under supervision and direction, with 120 hours of supervision, no more than half in groups and at least half from an LCSW.
Georgia does not license bachelor's-level social workers; the composite board licenses only the LMSW and LCSW.
The board's endorsement rule (135-3-.04) names only professional counselors and marriage and family therapists, so confirm the route for social workers with the board before relying on it.
Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Social Work Compact and Georgia
Georgia has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact. When the Compact opens, a social worker whose home state is Georgia will be able to apply for one multistate license that covers every member state, and members' multistate licensees will be able to practice here. That has not happened yet: as of October 2026 the Commission was still building its data system and had issued no multistate licenses. Until it does, practicing here takes a Georgia license.
Keeping it current
Georgia renews social work licenses every 2 years, with 35 hours of continuing education per cycle. The cycle runs October 1 of each even year to September 30 two years later. At least 5 of the 35 hours are professional ethics taken synchronously; at least 15 must be social work core hours; no more than 10 may be asynchronous. Holding licenses in several states means several calendars and several sets of CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
