California licenses independent clinical social workers as the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), through the Board of Behavioral Sciences. California is not a Social Work Licensure Compact member. Below: what California asks of a social worker already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.
California Social Work License Requirements
California licenses social workers at 2 levels: the ASW (Associate Clinical Social Worker) and the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).
LCSW: ASWB Clinical. The California Law and Ethics Exam is also required.
Independent clinical practice requires the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).
3,000 hours of post-master's supervised experience for the clinical license.
California requires a state law or jurisprudence exam.
Licensed elsewhere: Path A (licensure by credential) is for clinical social workers who have held an active, unrestricted license at the highest clinical level for at least two years and have a CSWE-accredited MSW; they complete California-specific coursework and pass the California Law and Ethics Exam. Everyone else uses Path B, which reviews education and experience.

The endorsement route expects 2 years of licensure elsewhere, counted at the level you are applying for.
California has no bachelor's- or master's-level license; the only social work license is the LCSW, reached through ASW registration.
Supervision is counted in weeks, not hours: at least 104 supervised weeks of experience, including 52 weeks of individual or triadic supervision (13 by an LCSW).
Path A applicants must still complete California coursework, including 12 hours of California law and ethics, 7 hours of child abuse assessment and reporting, and suicide risk assessment training.
Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Social Work Compact and California
California is not a Social Work Licensure Compact member, so a multistate license will not cover practice here even once the Compact opens. Seeing clients located in California takes a California license, by endorsement where the state offers it or a full application where it does not.
Keeping it current
California renews social work licenses every 2 years, with 36 hours of continuing education per cycle. Includes 6 hours of law and ethics each period, plus a one-time 3-hour telehealth course for renewals after July 1, 2023. Holding licenses in several states means several calendars and several sets of CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
