Concierge support for the Alaska application — start to issued license.

Alaska licenses independent clinical social workers as the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), through the Alaska Board of Social Work Examiners. Alaska has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact, but no multistate licenses are being issued yet. Below: what Alaska asks of a social worker already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Alaska Social Work License Requirements

Alaska licenses social workers at 4 levels: the LBSW (Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker), the LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker), the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and the Temporary license (Temporary license (master or baccalaureate social worker)).

LBSW: ASWB Bachelors. The regulation still calls it the basic examination.

LMSW: ASWB Masters. The regulation still calls it the intermediate examination.

LCSW: ASWB Clinical.

Independent clinical practice requires the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).

3,000 hours of post-master's supervised experience for the clinical license, including 100 hours of direct supervision.

Licensed elsewhere: Alaska licenses by credentials if your current license came from a state whose requirements were at least as strict when it was issued. You also need three professional references and proof of continued competency: an exam passed within two years, or 1,500 hours of licensed work plus the required CE within the last five years.

Where Alaska Applications Get Delayed

The 3,000 clinical hours must be completed within the 10 years before application, over at least two years, and the 100 hours of supervision may include no more than 50 hours in groups.

HB 110 became law without the governor's signature on June 22, 2026 (chapter 28 SLA 26); its compact sections take effect January 1, 2027.

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Social Work Compact and Alaska

Alaska has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact (June 22, 2026). When the Compact opens, a social worker whose home state is Alaska will be able to apply for one multistate license that covers every member state, and members' multistate licensees will be able to practice here. That has not happened yet: as of October 2026 the Commission was still building its data system and had issued no multistate licenses. Until it does, practicing here takes an Alaska license.

Keeping it current

Alaska renews social work licenses every 2 years, with 45 hours of continuing education per cycle. Each cycle needs 6 hours in substance abuse, 6 in cross-cultural education (3 on Alaska Native issues after the first renewal, all 6 at the first), 3 in ethics, 3 in teletherapy and 3 in suicide education; at least 10 hours must be live or synchronous. A first renewal after less than 12 months of licensure needs 21 hours. Holding licenses in several states means several calendars and several sets of CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
