Alabama licenses independent clinical social workers as the LICSW (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker), through the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners. Alabama has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact, but no multistate licenses are being issued yet. Below: what Alabama asks of a social worker already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Alabama Social Work License Requirements

Alabama licenses social workers at 4 levels: the LBSW (Licensed Bachelor Social Worker), the LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker), the LICSW (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker) and the PIP (Private Independent Practice certification).

LBSW: ASWB Bachelors. Must work under a board-approved supervisor for two years (at least 96 hours of supervision).

LMSW: ASWB Masters. The licensee designates clinical or non-clinical at licensure; either track requires two years of supervision (at least 96 hours).

LICSW: ASWB Clinical. Requires a current LMSW.

Independent clinical practice requires the LICSW (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker).

3,000 hours of post-master's supervised experience for the clinical license, including 96 hours of direct supervision.

Licensed elsewhere: Alabama grants reciprocity at the matching level to holders of an active license from a state with equivalent standards. Applicants who already passed a licensing exam do not retake it, but must send verification of the exam, their supervision and any discipline.

Where Alabama Applications Get Delayed

All 24 months of LBSW or LMSW supervision must be completed within 36 months or the supervision credit is lost.

Only an LICSW holding PIP certification may practice social casework independently as a private contractor.

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Social Work Compact and Alabama

Alabama has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact (May 9, 2024). When the Compact opens, a social worker whose home state is Alabama will be able to apply for one multistate license that covers every member state, and members' multistate licensees will be able to practice here. That has not happened yet: as of October 2026 the Commission was still building its data system and had issued no multistate licenses. Until it does, practicing here takes an Alabama license.

Keeping it current

Alabama renews social work licenses every 2 years, with 30 hours of continuing education per cycle. 10 hours must be live (interactive Zoom counts), 3 in ethics. LICSWs also need 6 clinical hours, 3 of them a review of the current DSM; LMSWs with the clinical designation need 3 clinical hours; anyone supervising under a board contract needs 3 hours in supervision. There is a 60-day grace period to renew, but CE must be finished before the license expires. Holding licenses in several states means several calendars and several sets of CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
